Ukrainian Dancing

En français:

Nous avons appris à propos de la culture Ukrainenne aujourd'hui. En particulier, la danse Ukrainenne. Les costumes sont détaillées et ont beaucoup de couleurs vifs. 

In English:

We began learning about Ukrainian culture today. In particular, Ukrainian dance. The dancers costumes have a lot of detail and bright colours.  

What is a Naulingnuit?

En français:
Nous sommes en train d'apprendre à propos des inuits de Nunavut. Aujourd'hui, nous avons regardé des artefacts de la chasse et la vie traditionelle. Voici un photo d'un naulingnuit. C'est utilisé pour la chasse des poissons sous la glace.

In English:
We are learning about the inuit people in Nunavut. Today, we looked at some artifacts for traditional hunting. Here is a picture of a naulingnuit. It is used to catch fish under the ice.

Is it Sunny in Iqaluit Today?

En français: Voici des choses que nous faisons en classe. Nous apprennons à propos de la différence entre la température à Iqaluit et chez nous.

Nous avons aussi crée des histoires avec des légos, pour pratiquer parler en français et apprendre plus de vocabulaire de tous les jours. 

In English: Here are some things we have been doing in class. We are learning about the difference in temperature, between Iqaluit and here.

We have also been making stories using lego, to practice speaking in French. This helps us learn everyday "playing" vocabulary. 

Making a Thermos

En français:
Aujourd'hui nous avons fait un thermos pour garder l'eau froide et testé son éfficacité. Ça a marché!


In English:
Today we made a thermos to keep water cold and tested its effectiveness. It worked!
 

Animal Adaptations

En français:
Nous avons appris dernièrement comment les animaux se protègent du temps froid et chaud dans l'environnement.

In English:
We have been learning about how different animals protect themselves from hot and cold temperatures in their environment.

En français:
C'est le printemps!  Quelle belle journée pour marcher autour du lac et jouer sur la colline.

In English:
Spring is in the air!  What a nice day for a walk around the lake.  We stopped to play on the hill.

C'est La St. Patrick!

En français: Aujourd'hui c'était La St. Patrick! Le petit farfadet nous a joué un tour!  It a mélangé nos souliers et laissé des taches de pied partout.  Mais, il nous a donné des petits cadeaux aussi!

In English: Today was St. Patrick's Day!  The little leprechaun played some funny tricks on us!  He mixed up our shoes and left his footprints everywhere.  But he left us some little gifts as well!

Did our pirate ships float?

En français:
On a pris nos bâteaux de pirates au lac aujourd'hui, pour voir si on pouvait les faire flotter. Presque tous nos bâteaux ont flottés. Youpi! On a bien appris les concepts en sciences! Bravo les amis!

In English:
We took our pirate boats to the lake today, to see if they would float. They almost all floated. Yay! This means we applied the skills we learned in our floatability unit, in science class. Way to go, 2PL!

Let's get moving!

En français:

On avait la chance d'apprendre comment marcher avec des pôles urbains, cet après-midi. C'est bon pour la santé! On a même monté la colline avec nos pôles, en marchant autour du lac.

L'unité de dance à commencé aujourd'hui. C'est amusant! Boogie Woogie!

Le PPF est amusant. On apprend le français en parlant à nos amis. Madame a empreunté du Lego, pour nous. 

In English:

We were lucky to learn about urban poling again, this afternoon. It is a good workout. We even walked up the hill, while we were walking around the lake.

We started our dance unit in phys. ed. today. It is fun!

PPF is where we learn French by speaking and playing with our classmates, in French. Madame borrowed some Lego, for us to use.

Grade Two Water Experiments and Dance

En Français:
Nous avons fait des expériences avec de l'eau pendant notre unité de science "Chaud et froid."  Quel récipient d'eau va évaporer plus/moins et pourquoi?  Aussi, nous avons commencé notre unité de danse avec Miss Nicky.  Que c'est amusant!

In English:
We have been doing some experiments with water in our "Hot and Cold" science unit.  Which container will produce more/less evaporation and why?  Also, we started our dance unit with Miss Nicky.  What a fun time!

Two-Dimentional Art

En Français:
Nous avons fait de l'art de deux dimensions pour la géométrie.  Après, les enfants ont fait des graphiques à propos des nombres de formes qu'ils ont utilisés.

In English:
We did two-dimensional art projects for geometry.  Afterward, students graphed the number of each shape they used.

Comparing in Social Studies

En Français:
Nous avons appris à propos des diagrammes de Venn aujourd'hui, pour comparer notre ville avec Meteghan. Nous avons beaucoup de choses en commun, même si on est de l'autre bout du pays.

In English:
We learned how to use a Venn Diagram today, to compare our town with Meteghan. We realized we have a lot of things in common even if we are on opposite sides of the country.

C'est le 100e jour d'école!!!

En français:
Quelle journée amusante! Nous avons fait plusieurs activités pour  célébrer le 100e jour d'école, comme cette couronne.

In English:
What a fun day! We did several activities in celebration of the 100th day of school, like this crown. We've made it through over half of grade two. Yay!!!

What a beautiful Day!

En français:
C'est la semaine du Carnaval! Aujourd'hui nous avons parlé du Bonhomme Carnaval, écouté de la musique traditionelle du Québec et nous avons joué aux cuillères.
Il faisait tellement beau dehors, que nous avons marché autour du lac, pour l'éducation physique.

In English:
It's our Carnaval week! Today we learned about Bonhomme Carnaval, the mascot of the Quebec festival. We also listened to traditional music and played the spoons.
It was so nice outside that we walked around the lake, for phys. ed.

Trickster Week!!!

En français:
Cette semaine, un groupe de théâtre, qui s'appelle Trickster, est à notre école. Chaque classe va préparer et présenter une pièce de théâtre. Nous sommes des pirates pour notre pièce (grosse surprise). Nous sommes les "plus puants, moins beaux pirates des sept océans".Arrrrrr!!!

In English:
This week, Trickster Theatre Group is doing a residency at our school. Each class is preparing and presenting a play. Our play is about pirates (of course!). We are the "stinkiest, ugliest pirates of the seven seas". Arrrrr!!!!!!

Can you make a pebble float?

We had a busy day in science today! Our challenge, was to make a pebble float. Look at all of the different designs we came up with. What a creative bunch of 2nd graders :-) Some of us got to test our designs, and the others will do so next time. Several students chose to make a flat surface, in an effort to disperse the weight. Others made masts, as they thought it would create more stability. We are getting closer and closer to being ready to build our pirate ships. Arrr!

Virtual Fieldtrip to Ottawa!

En français: 
Quelle journée fantastique! Nous avons fait un appel "skype" avec le Musée des Beaux Arts, à Ottawa. L'animatrice nous a montré des ouvres d'art et nous avons parlé du premier plan, deuxième plan et l'arrière plan. Nous avons aussi parlé des couleurs froids et chauds. C'était incroyable

In English:
What an amazing Day! We "skyped" with the National Gallery of Canada, in Ottawa. Our class looked at paintings and talked about how sometimes the artist doesn't show all of the details that a picture would. For example, one of the paintings only had some facial features. We learned about warm/cool colours and background and foreground. It was a blast! :-) 

Ahoy, Matey!

En français:
-Nous avons fabriqué des bateaux en liège aujourd'hui, et nous avons appris l'importance de la quille pour la stabilité du bateau.
-Nous avons un nouveau journal à thème, ou nous pouvons écrire à propos des dessins que nous avons donné à Madame.
-Notre pirate de classe nous a ammené un jeu avec les sons. 

In English:
-We built cork boats today, where we learned the importance of the hull of a boat for stability. 
-We have a new themed journal. We can write about the drawing we have given to Madame.
-Our class pirate gave us a game about French sounds. 

Le Chat Botté

En français:
-Nous avons écouté le compte du "Chat Botté". C'était à propos d'un chat qu'on connait déjà, mais c'était le compte original. Le chat était intélligent!
-Le son de la semaine est: AIL
-Bowen, de 80 anthems in 80 days, nous a répondu à propos des forces à l'équateur qui ont causé qu'il pouvait facilement séparer les mains de son papa. C'était intéressant! Merci, Bowen! 

In English:
-We listened to "puss in Boots" today. It was about a cat that we are already familiar with from Shrek, but it was the original story. The cat was very smart!
-The sound of the week is:AIL
-Bowen, from 80 anthems in 80 days, answered our question about why he could easily open his dads hands when he was standing on the equator. He said that there were three forces at play: Gravity, Centrifugal force and the Coriolis Effect. It was very interesting! Thank you, Bowen!

The Equator is Amazing!

En français:
-Bowen est est allé au milieu du monde (l'équateur). Il nous a dit des faits intéressants à propos de l'équateur: comme la difficulté de garder les mains ensemble, si quelqu'un essaye de les séparer. Aussi, l'eau tourne en différents directions au hémisphère sud et nord.
-On a eu une assemblé aujourd'hui. À l'assemblé on a regardé un vidéo à propos de comment travailler en premier ensuite jouer.

In English:
-Bowen is an 8 yr. old blogging about his experiences while travelling on a fundraising trip with his family. We read about how he went to the middle of the Earth (equator). We learned about the equator and the hemispheres. Bowen described some interesting things about the equator, like it is hard to keep your hands together if someone tries to open them, and draining water turns in different directions in the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere.
-We had an assembly today. We watched a video about putting first things first.

Our Pirate Names

En français:
-Notre pirate Capitaine Rousseau est venu nous voir. Il nous a donné chacun un nom de pirate. Arrr! Nous avons dessiné nos pirates pas la suite.
-En sciences, nous avons mis des choses (chagements) dans des bateaux simples en pâte à modeler. Des choses ont flotté et d'autres choses ont coullé.

In English:
-Our pirate, Captain Rousseau, came to visit and gave us each a pirate name. Arrr! We drew our pirate personas afterwards.
-In science, we saw if we could make a simple plasticine boat hold something and still foat. Some things floated and some things sank.

From the Mountains to the Ocean

En français:
-En Études Sociales, nous avons discuté de la différence entre la géographie à High River et celle de Meteghan.
-En Mathématiques, nous avons parlé de nos stratégies d'addition et nous avons fait un problème écrit.

In English:
-In Social Studies, we talked about the difference between the geography of High River and Meteghan.
-In math, we discussed our strategies for two-digit addition.

A Cold Day With Van Gogh

We had a busy day in 2PL :-)
-We played "Guess My Number" via skype, with Mrs. Saunderson's class this morning. We wanted to ensure our technology is working well, as we are having a video conference with the National Gallery of Canada at the end of the month. What an exciting opportunity!
-We are discussing strategies for two-digit addition. We are really doing well with regrouping.
-We discussed Vincent Van Gogh's work "The Starry Night" and created our own winter versions. Come see them hanging outside our classroom.
-It was a very chilly day and we had two indoor recesses today. We are hoping for warmer temperatures on Monday, so we can get back to working on our snow forts.
